BottleneckConstraint

The process step with the lowest capacity, which sets the maximum throughput of the entire system.

A bottleneck is the resource or step with the least capacity in a process; it governs the throughput of the whole system. An hour lost at the bottleneck is an hour lost for the entire plant, while an hour saved anywhere else is often a mirage.

Identifying and systematically exploiting the bottleneck is the heart of the Theory of Constraints and its Drum-Buffer-Rope scheduling method.

Put Bottleneck into practice

SymplProcess turns these concepts into working models, calculators, and templates your whole team can use — no spreadsheets required.
