Capacity Utilization

Actual output as a percentage of maximum possible output — high utilization sounds good but drives up queue time.

Capacity utilization is actual output divided by maximum possible output. Managers instinctively push it toward 100%, but queueing theory shows that as utilization climbs past ~85%, waiting times and WIP grow exponentially.

This counter-intuitive trade-off — explained by Kingman's equation — is why lean operations deliberately keep slack at non-bottleneck resources to protect lead time.
