Maintenance

Preventive MaintenancePM / Planned Maintenance

Scheduled, time- or usage-based maintenance performed to prevent failures before they happen.

Preventive maintenance (PM) is maintenance carried out on a planned schedule — by calendar time or usage counts — to keep equipment healthy and prevent unexpected breakdowns. Examples include lubrication, filter changes, and component replacement at set intervals.

PM trades a little planned downtime for far less unplanned downtime, raising MTBF and availability. It is a core pillar of TPM and a stepping stone toward predictive maintenance.
